Cursing the Darkness

Has America gone crazy? Am I living in the twilight zone? Is the world portrayed in the media a horrible nightmare that I will soon wake up from? Can there really be women who celebrate the death of their children and share it on Youtube?   Do we really live in a day that sexual expression is on the same level as civil rights?   How can we call what is good evil and evil good? In the upside down climate in which we live the highest evil is calling evil…evil.

And here I find myself again ranting against the darkness…bemoaning the fallen nature of the world.   Somehow being shocked when things are happening just as the Bible said they would.

“in the last days there will be very difficult times. For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!”

I don’t think the Old Apostle Paul could have given a more fitting commentary for the state of affairs in our present day.

The solution Paul gave was not to get the right people in political office. It was not to protest abortion clinics. It was not to argue over words. The solution he gave was simple, “Preach the Word.” It is the message of the cross that can change people. It is the message of the Gospel that can set them free from their bondage of self-will and self-gratification. Jesus is the only antibiotic that can destroy the bacteria of sin in our souls. He is the only one who can give us something higher to live for, something nobler, something righteous. For the Christian now is not the time to groan about the darkness. Now is the time to love our cities and communities. Now is the time to get to know the people who live down the street from us. Now is the time to go to hard places and show love to unlovable people. Now is the time for us to give an answer for the hope that is within us, yet with gentleness and respect. Our day is dark, but it was just as dark when Jesus lived on the earth. Jesus came as the light of the world and the light dispelled the darkness. I am sick at how dark it is! I pray I shine the light of Jesus that is within me. If you know Christ I pray you would do the same.

Romans 13:12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.
